London Steam Railway Holiday
Sometimes a quite inspirational tour comes to mind – and this is it! Who else but Inside Track would even think about the London Eye (and we do it in style!), with steaming Ongar, Watercress and the Chesham Branch line! Then London, like nobody does it, and so much more – join us for our most memorable tour this season.
This is a lovely, easy going start. We meet at Gerrard’s Cross Station early afternoon, check in, then we are off to Chalfont. The very best electrified branch line awaits – to Chesham and back amid sublime Chiltern countryside! Our afternoon continues to a place called Bekonscot – a truly remarkable exhibition – where we find the world’s oldest model village. Then, just up the road is England’s oldest inn – the Royal Standard of England – tea/coffee or wotever here – enjoy the atmosphere and history before we return to the Bull in plenty of time to enjoy our evening meal together.
Well, well, well (that’s’ 3 more holes in the ground! – as they say!), but gawd blimey, then we are going to be bowled over unless we keep a good eye in! So, – to London we go for the London Eye, POST OFFICE TUNNEL and, don’t you know (!), Lords Cricket Ground. You’ll want to go home tomorrow ‘cos this day cannot be bettered.
But it can! – to an Ongar world for an Epping experience! No coach today as our intrepid courier leads the adventure by train to Marylebone, then on the “over ground” to Stratford. Here we catch an underground train (that isn’t!) to Epping. Heritage, heritage, heritage abounds with vintage buses, diesels and “Ongar vapeur” all amid the splendid Essex countryside and Epping Forest.
Thought the journey to the forest woz brilliant? – well how about this for the return. An over-ground underground back to Stratford – The Dockland driverless light railway to Royal Victoria Dock then we “fly” with Emirates over the dock and over the Thames, landing by the cable car at the O2 (dome). An epic day concludes by Clipper, cruising the Thames upstream via Tower Bridge and all the sights to Waterloo. An hour later we are back in Gerrard’s Cross having gone under and over the Thames. Can this be bettered?
Only joking! – of course it can be easily bettered, as we set off to the home of motor racing and aviation – Brooklands, of course, and now the home of the best bus/transport museum in the whole of Chertsey! Ever had a great Cockrow experience?! Then join us for one! Tea, buns and cakes at the most incredible small gauge railway in the world. Enough to make your eyes water? – next is the Watercress Line – “over the Alps” between Alton and Alresford. This completes a day that definitely can’t be bettered.
Probably one of the very best Inside Track finales awaits. Tea/coffee or wotever at Boulters Lock (Thameside), then our privately chartered Salters Steamer (that doesn’t!) picks us up and we chug (!) to Windsor. On board will be a sumptuous buffet lunch to enjoy during the very best Thames cruise – Maidenhead to Windsor is regarded as such – an excellent end to an excellent 5 day holiday. Homeward bound journeys commence from Gerrard’s Cross early afternoon.
The Bull Hotel – Gerrard’s Cross
The Bull Hotel oozes olde worlde charm, and features a well-appointed “buffet style” restaurant and bar with lovely gardens and lounges to relax in at the end of the day. All the rooms have all the usual features one would expect of a well established 4 star hotel – and this has been an Inside Track favourite for many years now! There’s even a duck pond over the road!
