How about this for an Easter escape? A holiday full of diverse attractions ranging from wildfowl to a bronze aged village and from a musical performance to wonderful gardens. All that, and the usual blend of heritage railways – what more could you want?
We all meet up in the cathedral city of Ely about lunchtime and time is allowed to explore, and perhaps visit the Cathedral, before heading north. A stop at Welney to visit the interesting wildfowl sanctuary follows and then we take a rural route (it can hardly be anything else round here!), via the Denver Sluices, up to Kings Lynn.

The Mid Norfolk Railway, running from East Dereham, has a truly rustic 1950’s feel running through country stations with names such as Yaxham and Thruxton. Lunchtime is spent in Wymondham where you might like to visit the towering abbey. Then it’s time to get in among the flowers as we head for Bressingham Gardens and what a place this is! Three steam railway lines, Dads Army, a carousel and you can even buy a rockery!

A super day out starts with a drive, via Spalding, to Wansford. Now, it’s our ‘Posh’ event as we join the Nene Valley Railway. This is a major preserved railway with multiple stations, a large collection of engines, and a “proper” rail journey experience. We’ll be here all morning and then transfer into Peterborough with time to forage for lunch, or even visit Cathedral number two. We track back to Kings Lynn pausing for an hour or so at the Bronze Age village discovered at Flag Fen - this place is truly remarkable.

The best of North Norfolk is enjoyed today as we’re off to the seaside. We’ll show you some interesting things on the way pausing at Castle Rising, the royal station at Wolferton, and Sandringham. The North Norfolk Railway provides todays steamy delights amid the rolling farmland and coastal scenery. Then, how’s this for variety? At Thursford there are shiny showman’s engines galore, mechanical organs playing, a fairground roundabout to ride and a remarkable live Wurlitzer performance – time for a knees-up!

Luggage goes ahead as we rail from Kings Lynn to Whittlesford and then transfer to nearby Duxford. The Imperial War Museum makes for a fantastic finale amid hangers full of historic planes. Many would spend a whole day here but our couple of hours should suffice for most. Homeward bound journeys commence after lunch from nearby Cambridge Station.

Situated on the Tuesday Market Place in Kings Lynn this 4 star hotel is a real find. It has a lovely restaurant, a modern bar, and the rooms boast all the amenities one would expect. A characterful local inn is right next door and serves a variety of real ales – if that’s your favourite tipple.
