The South Coast of England boasts a profusion of nostalgic transport attractions in a condensed area – perfect for us. On the flip side, things down south aren’t cheap, but trust us, this is exceptional value for money.
We meet early afternoon at Southampton and take the ferry across to Hythe for a ride along the pier on the world’s oldest electric pier railway. If this all sounds a bit too full on, don’t worry, we will also run a shuttle coach service into Winchester for the opportunity to visit the city and immense cathedral.
Today we cross to the Isle of Wight by the UK’s only remaining scheduled hovercraft service. Time on the island for a ride with both the Island Line and the lovely steam railway. A super country base in which to stay. The public areas are well appointed and reside underneath
the thatched roof of this historic coaching inn. The accommodation is all “out the back” in a modern extension that is blissfully quiet as it’s surrounded by the hotel’s plush grounds and countryside beyond.
