We are so pleased to be able to offer a Norfolk tour based in the fine city of Norwich. The county has so much to offer those interested in heritage transport and we have certainly captured the best of it in an itinerary that is broad in its content.
We all meet up at Norwich around lunchtime, and once free of luggage, jump on a train to Hoveton & Wroxham. The Bure Valley Railway running between Wroxham and Aylsham provides our afternoon dose of steam and on the way into Norwich for the first time we’ll stop off at a vantage point for a panoramic view of this fine city.
The best of North Norfolk is enjoyed today as we are off to the seaside! The North Norfolk Railway provides steamy delights for us amid the rolling farmland and coastal scenery. We make the most of it and allow for time to visit the bustling but charming seaside town of Sheringham. Then, how’s this for variety? At Thursford there are shiny showman’s engines galore, mechanical organs playing, a fairground roundabout to ride and a remarkable live Wurlitzer performance.
This morning we are heading east to travel the triangle of branch lines linking Norwich, Yarmouth and Lowestoft. Then, it’s a journey across to nearby Carlton Coleville where you can ride on trams, trolleybuses and a train. There’s also street scenes and exhibitions to keep you fully occupied. Now, unusually for Inside Track, we are giving you a little free time in Norwich. You might like to visit the Cathedral, the Mustard Shop, or wander around the market.
The Mid Norfolk Railway, running from East Dereham, has a truly rustic feel, watch out for deer, rabbits, and birds of prey. Lunchtime is spent in Wymondham where you might like to visit the towering abbey. Then it’s time to get among the flowers at Bressingham Gardens. Three steam railways, Dads Army, a carousel, and you can even buy a rockery!
Our final day and we must get on the Broads – after all that is what Norfolk is most famous for. So, we’re off to Horning for a cruise on the Southern Comfort. This is a mock paddle steamer with comfortable lounge, outside decks and a bar. Then, it’s back into Norwich, setting down at the station for early-afternoon homeward bound trains.
This lovely old building is right in the heart of Norwich opposite the Cathedral. It is sumptuously appointed, and the original courtyard has been covered to create a dining room and bar with real character. You will love staying here, we are sure.
