Outline Itinerary
Thursday
Journey to Liskeard and meet your courier and coach early afternoon. Then, relieved of luggage, we enjoy an afternoon of branch lines. The first is the delightful riverside run on the “switchback” line to Looe. There’s time for a nose around this quaint harbour town and then our second branch line takes us to Newquay. A short transfer from here delivers us to the Penventon Park in Redruth.
Friday
We are so looking forward to taking you on a splendid day trip to the Isles of Scilly. It only takes 20 minutes, flying from Land’s End International Airport, which means we can have a full day over there. We will have time to visit the island‘s capital, St Marys, and take a launch to Tresco for the world-famous Abbey Gardens. All in all, this is an expensive but ultimately memorable day trip to the Scilly Isles.
Saturday
We head west today, by train to St Erth for the St Ives branch line. This is iconic Cornwall – 13 minutes of magic coastal scenery. We complete this morning’s rail travel into Penzance and then go out to Cornwall’s latest branch line revival at Helston. Our afternoon takes us on a journey back via Truro to begin a lovely rail and river tour via the Falmouth branch line and a cruise up the Carrick Roads.
Sunday
From Redruth it is but a short journey to the Lappa Valley for a steam train ride from Benny Halt to East Wheal Rose where attractions include a miniature train ride and mining heritage. Our steamy Sunday continues as we enjoy an afternoon at Cornwall’s premier steam railway. To make our visit more fun and topical we lunch on board the Bodmin and Wenford Steam Railway – pasties that is, washed down by Cornish ale (or a cuppa tea!) – what a great day out this is!
Monday
A relaxed morning drive across the moors to Launceston, where we join our friends Kay and Nigel for our final “event” of the holiday. We finish with “steam and cream” at the Launceston Steam Railway. Privately chartered, great fun and certain to send us on our way home with a spring in our heels. From here it is a short journey to Gunnislake, where we catch the famous branch line train to Plymouth, crossing Calstock Viaduct, and down by the Tamar. A lovely line and a lovely finale to a lovely holiday in lovely Cornwall.
