Hants & Dorset Steam Railway Holiday
Dorset | Hampshire
Thursday, August 20th
There are very few areas of the country, if any, that can boast such a surprising and diverse selection of historic and transport related attractions so close at hand. It’s an absolute pleasure to be able to weave these visits within an imaginative itinerary that encompasses journeys by coach, train, boat and ferry. Throw in a thrilling day viewing the Bournemouth Air Show from a steam ship and this holiday has got the lot. From the heights of “The Alps” to the depths of the forest and across the water to the Isle of Wight – great fun for all!
ThursdayWe meet at Winchester Station around lunchtime and take a country drive to New Alresford for an afternoon of steam travelling over “The Alps” on the Mid-Hants Railway. With all afternoon at our disposal we can really make the most of our time. We may even also be able to fit in a visit to the lovely Cathedral District of Winchester before checking in.
FridayWe will be delighted to treat you to a memorable day on and around the Isle of Purbeck, home to the outstanding Swanage Steam Railway. We rail to Bournemouth, cross on the Sandbanks Chain Ferry to the “island” and devote plenty of time to the day’s main attraction. Options allow for photography and time to explore the towns of Corfe Castle and Swanage itself. Later on we drive to nearby Bovington for the fascinating Tank Museum and then track back to Winchester by way of a train from Wareham.
SaturdayToday is frankly amazing. We travel down to Poole and board the S.S. Sheildhall to sail out into the bay and anchor for the day. Whilst thousands line the sea-front for a view of the amazing air show that Bournemouth puts on we are in the heart of it. Refreshments will be provided on board as the various historic and modern aircraft swoop overhead. There is no better way to view this spectacular event.
SundayFor our big day out to the Isle of Wight we’re off to the port this morning to join the famous Red Funnel Ferry. We sail up Southampton Water and across The Solent to Cowes where our magical tour begins. See the island the Inside Track way with a trip that takes us through charming villages, leafy lanes and shows us the coastal delights as well. Of course we’ll ride the Island Line electric railway as well as chugging and chuffing on the Isle of Wight Steam Railway. After a relaxed but fulfilling time we complete our travels via the thrill of a hovercraft ride back to Southsea.
MondayOur last day takes us back onto Southampton Water for the ferry to Hythe and a ride on the Victorian electric pier railway. Just down the road is the delightful Exbury Estate. Not just lovely gardens to admire and potter around but a steam train running through them. This will make for a very pleasant finale before transferring to Southampton for homeward bound journeys, commencing early afternoon.
The Winchester Hotel, Winchester
This is a classy establishment. Close to Winchester Railway Station the hotel is a 4 star and oozes refinement. All rooms are well-appointed and the public areas comfortable and stylish. This is a real find and we are so happy to be able to stay here. There’s also a spa and pool so don’t forget your “cozzies”!
