Kent Steam Railway and Walking Holiday
FridayWe meet at Edenbridge Station early afternoon and start the holiday with a visit to Hever Castle, the childhood home of Anne Boleyn. Stately rooms, portraits, formal gardens, a visit to Henry VIII and even a maze will absorb us this afternoon.
SaturdayOur day starts after a leisurely breakfast with a full length steam train ride from Tunbridge Wells to Eridge on the Spa Valley Railway. Then our first railway ramble is along the Tunbridge Wells to East Grinstead track-bed, through the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (4 miles). Then a very different experience as we lunch in a Vineyard complete with wine Tasting and tour. Later it’s steam on the Bluebell Railway before returning to the hotel to freshen up before the highlight of an evening dining train experience on the Spa Valley Railway commences – what a day!
Sunday“Oh I do like to be beside the seaside” and so we shall! We drive south to Rye from where we stroll along Col. Stephens track-bed to Camber Sands passing wildfowl and a golf course (1 ¾ miles). Further along the coast we’ll enjoy an uplifting experience on the Hastings Cliff Railway before an afternoon stroll on the “Cuckoo Trail”, the old line that ran northwards from Polegate to Tunbridge Wells (this can be 6 or 2 miles as you prefer) either way ends up in a Greek Restaurant…….naturally!!
MondayA very simple final morning sees us enjoying a private visit to our friends at the Bentley Miniature Railway before homeward bound journeys commence from Uckfield Station around midday.
For three nights we are accommodated at the elegant, 4 stars, Spa Hotel in Royal Tunbridge Wells. This classy place is set in 14 acres of grounds and is renowned for it’s excellent cuisine. After an active day treading the track-beds you might enjoy relaxing in the luxurious pool, sauna and spa.
